About the choir...
Since 1981 the Shiron Singers have promoted the beauty and appreciation of traditional and modern Jewish music to a broad audience in Vancouver, Canada. Members of the British Columbia Choral Federation, they have performed their vast repertoire on the Orpheum stage, were featured at several venues during Vancouver's World Exposition in 1986, and continue to perform for events throughout the community.
About the director...
Choir director Elizabeth Wolak has conducted many award-winning choirs in her native Poland, as well as Russia, Australia, and Canada.
An honors graduate of the Jagiellonian University in English and musicology, and the Cracow Conservatory of Music in piano and conducting, Elizabeth was among Poland's most celebrated conductors and choirmasters during the years 1951 to 1961. As associate conductor of the Cracow State Philharmonic's acclaimed 120-voice choir, her group won first prize in Poland's national choral competition three consecutive years.
In Sydney, Australia, Elizabeth directed the Temple Emanuel Choir before settling in Vancouver where she has conducted several Jewish choral ensembles over the years. In 1964 she formed the 35-voice Jewish Community Choir of Vancouver, which went on to win first prize at the B.C. Kiwanis Music Festival two years in a row and produced a record before disbanding in 1974. From 1971 to 1981, Elizabeth directed Vancouver's Temple Sholom Choir, after which the Shiron Singers was formed.
Accomplished pianist Muriel Morris has worked with both the Shiron Singers and the Jewish Community Choir of Vancouver.
